As a small business owner, we all know that there’s no HR department handing you PTO. No backup when you step out. No one covering your inbox while you’re at the beach with your kids. When you run your own business, especially as a solopreneur, taking a break feels almost impossible. And yet, here we are, in the middle of spring break season with summer right around the corner, and I want to have an honest conversation about something that doesn’t get talked about enough:

The fact that you HAVE to take a break, and more importantly, that you CAN.

I’ve said it a thousand times, and I’ll keep saying it: take a break when you need one. You have to take care of yourself so you don’t burn out. It’s not just feel-good advice. For those of us who wear every hat, burn the midnight oil, and feel pulled in a million different directions, stepping away isn’t optional. It’s survival.

I’m coming off a twelve day run that included three business trips: two for speaking engagements and one for a large client project I’ve been working on AND two speaking engagements built in. When I got home from that final trip, I was fried. I was also behind with work. But spring break started almost immediately, and guess what? I decided to go on break and catch up when I get back.

So today, we’re going deep. Not just why you need to step back, but exactly HOW to do it, so that when spring break is in full swing, or summer arrives, you can be truly present with the people you love.
